About this area
Maori legend tells us that Kupe, the great Polynesian navigator,
made his first landing near Taipa in A.D. 950. In 1769, Captain
James Cook sailed past the entrance and recorded in his journal
- Doubtless a Bay. From 1831, European whalers, timber workers and
immigrants arrived here.
Historic Mangonui village is situated on the edge of Mangonui
harbour, just a few minutes from Arjays at Coopers. Once a bustling
whaling and trading port, many of the historic buildings today house
restaurants, cafes, post office and gift shops. Fine dining is available
at The Galley Restaurant and Waterfront Cafe and cafes include the
famous Mangonui Fish Shop.
Between Arjays at Coopers and Mangonui harbour is Mill Bay, an
artist's dream with its backdrop of the dominating Rangikapiti Pa,
its yachts and boats of all kinds. At Coopers Beach and Taipa, there
is fine dining at Coopers Cafe and shops of all kinds, take-away
food, plus a medical centre and pharmacy.
There is easy boat launching at Taipa and Mill Bay. Fishing, sailing,
diving and beach activities are the main attractions throughout
Doubtless Bay with Coopers Beach, Cable Bay and Matai Bay on the
Karikari Peninsula offering excellent safe sea bathing. This is
the perfect base while you explore the best of Northland - Karikari
Peninsula, Doubtless Bay, Ninety Mile Beach, Hokianga Harbour, Ahipara
and Cape Reinga (the northern tip of New Zealand) with shopping,
art trails, cafes and restaurants, museums, vineyards and golf courses.
There are many other attractions within a short drive of Arjays
at Coopers. You can find out more at Doubtless
