Coopers BeachHow to get here

We are located in the far north of New Zealand's North Island. Arjays at Coopers is in a quiet location, just off State Highway 10 and a few minutes walk from safe and shady sea bathing at Coopers Beach.

By air:
There are one or two daily return flights from Auckland to Kaitaia Airport (about a half hour drive away) and four or five daily return flights to Kerikeri Airport (about 45 minutes drive) operated by Air New Zealand Link. Rental cars at Kaitaia Airport are available from Northland Rentals.

Travelling here by car by the direct route using State Highway 1 and State Highway 10, the journey time from Auckland airport is about four and a half hours without stops. Travelling the Twin Coast Discovery Highway - a world-class touring route leaving from, and returning to, Auckland - requires at least two days in each direction to visit the many interesting and beautiful attractions along the way. Visit Go Northwest for more information.

Follow State Highway 1 north from Whangarei and turn right on to State Highway 10 at Pakaraka junction and follow the signs to Doubtless Bay. After an hour's drive, pass the turn offs for Mangonui township and then, after the fire station, turn right into Kupe Road and then right again into Braemar Avenue. We are on the right hand side up a long right-of-way.

Coming from Kaitaia and Awanui on State Highway 10, pass the Coopers Beach Shopping Centre, and the beach access, and Kupe Road is the first turning on the left.

About this area

Maori legend tells us that Kupe, the great Polynesian navigator, made his first landing near Taipa in A.D. 950. In 1769, Captain James Cook sailed past the entrance and recorded in his journal - Doubtless a Bay. From 1831, European whalers, timber workers and immigrants arrived here.

Historic Mangonui village is situated on the edge of Mangonui harbour, just a few minutes from Arjays at Coopers. Once a bustling whaling and trading port, many of the historic buildings today house restaurants, cafes, post office and gift shops. Fine dining is available at The Galley Restaurant and Waterfront Cafe and cafes include the famous Mangonui Fish Shop.

Between Arjays at Coopers and Mangonui harbour is Mill Bay, an artist's dream with its backdrop of the dominating Rangikapiti Pa, its yachts and boats of all kinds. At Coopers Beach and Taipa, there is fine dining at Coopers Cafe and shops of all kinds, take-away food, plus a medical centre and pharmacy.

There is easy boat launching at Taipa and Mill Bay. Fishing, sailing, diving and beach activities are the main attractions throughout Doubtless Bay with Coopers Beach, Cable Bay and Matai Bay on the Karikari Peninsula offering excellent safe sea bathing. This is the perfect base while you explore the best of Northland - Karikari Peninsula, Doubtless Bay, Ninety Mile Beach, Hokianga Harbour, Ahipara and Cape Reinga (the northern tip of New Zealand) with shopping, art trails, cafes and restaurants, museums, vineyards and golf courses.

There are many other attractions within a short drive of Arjays at Coopers. You can find out more at Doubtless Bay Online.
